"If you want curls, stop combing them once they're dry."

Whether fusilli or spaghetti-shaped, how hair grows from the scalp is genetically determined. A US study sees an evolutionary advantage in curls: They better protect the scalp, and thus the brain, from heat. But when it comes to proper care, many curly-haired people are overwhelmed. Shelves are everywhere, full of products that are supposed to either define or tame curls. "Although the majority of people have light waves to curls, the topic is often treated like a niche," says master hairdresser Mona Haase. She specializes in curly haircuts and gives seminars on proper care. She says: Once you've found the right routine, curls are even easier to care for than straight hair. In an interview with SZ Magazine, she explains what's important.
